World Championship Results From Green Bay
PMTT Press Release Editor,
Duane Landmeier
On the weekend of September
22nd & 23rd the Professional Musky Tournament Trail visited the bay of Green Bay
and the Fox River for the 2012 Ranger Boats World Championship. The anglers were
very excited to fish a fishery of this caliber. There have been many muskies in
the mid fifty inch class, fish over 40lbs caught in these waters. The muskies
turned the tables on the fishermen at this event however. The muskies in this
water tend to follow migrating bait fish throughout the year. The main forage is
the shad which are in turn followed by smallmouth bass, walleye and perch. The
population of muskies in the area was down because of the shortage of the
muskies main prey being unavailable. That coupled with three major cold fronts
the week of the tournament and the fact that they were dredging the river which
made it look like chocolate milk made it very tough to contact fish.
For the first time in the 14 year history of the PMTT, no fish were caught or
registered either day of the tournament. A humbling but true record was set with
nothing hitting the bottom of an anglers net. Mother Nature does what it does
and the 76 anglers competing in the event did not have an answer for her. At the
awards, the room was full of great anglers and the sigh of disbelief that there
were no fish caught when the standings board was revealed. The first prize was a
New Ranger 619 Fisherman, Rangertrail Trailer, powered by a Mercury Marine
OptiMax worth over $45,000 was given away in a drawing. Steve Lindahl, Ranger
Boat Rep was on hand at the event and passed on some words of encouragement to
the anglers. “It’s fishing guys. Everyone gets out there and does the best they
can. Not every team catches fish at every tournament and this time everyone
experienced it together”, stated Lindahl. Every team’s boat number was put in a
box and you had a one in 38 chance to win it. It was like the lottery! The lucky
team drawn was team #25 of Don Asleson and Bill Taylor, both from southern
Wisconsin.
Lindahl also brought the crowd up to date on some exciting news from Ranger
Boats. “As of this date, the Ranger Cup incentive program has given away over 8
million dollars in bonus prizes to Ranger Boat owners and that number keeps
going up. Also, very excited to announce the 45th anniversary for Ranger Boats
and the introduction of the new aluminum series Ranger coming in 2013” Lindahl
stated.
The prestigious Top Gun Team of the Year Award which is given out to the most
consistent team that catches muskies throughout the year during the tournaments
was won by Ross Korpela of Carlton, MN and Chad Mitchell of Inver Grove Heights,
MN. In 2nd Place in the Top Gun standings were Austin Vig and Andrew Matz of
Prior Lake, MN. And in 3rd place for Top Gun honors were Duane Landmeier of
Hinckley, IL. and Robert Taylor of Lafayette, Indiana. The winners said that the
pre fishing before the tournaments gave them their success. Along with thinking
out their strategy together to decide on what technique, structure or pattern
they will use during the events and sticking to their original game plan. The
Top Gun Team of the Year shall receive a free entry into all of the following
year PMTT qualifying events and ease out as boat number one
